I love recycled burlap bags... I've seen them made into dozens of items from decorative pillows to stylish pillows. So when I saw these burlap-boasting Christmas stockings at the Vegas market this summer, I couldn't resist. Even my co-shopper, my sister Katie, was hooked and quickly we placed an order for homebodies.

I'm looking for ideas to decorate our master bedroom, and I came across this beautiful space. I just love it! It's so simple, yet so captivating.... from the contrasting fabrics to the matching side tables and lamps to the creative way vinyl lettering was used to add pizazz to the wall. It's well-balanced but definitely does not feel square. I also love how the sunburst mirror plays off the geometrical design of the bedspread and how it reflects the timeless chandelier. All of it is very welcoming.

School starts soon in Tooele County and just in time, homebodies has just received two adorable desks. Both have been re-finished by hand.

The black desk comes with a matching stool and is equipped with 5 drawers - and it's priced at only $75! (UPDATE: SOLD!)

The handpainted desk is unique and colorful (who wouldn't want to do homework while sitting here?!). It has 3 drawers and measures approximately 48"w x 30"h x 24"d - $140. The cool chair with the zebra print seat is sold separately, $50.

Malorie's Bedroom

ok, ok. My niece Malorie is almost six months old and I have neglected putting her adorable nursery on our blog to share with all of you.

What I love most about Malorie's room is the hand-stitched Precious Moments border. It was made by her Grandma. I don't know how long the border measures (I'd guess it's at least 12 feet long), but to me, every stitch represents love.

All of the furniture was re-painted by Malorie's mom, Katie, in a soft shade of mint green or cream. Accent colors include mauve and chocolate brown.
The room also features a vintage chandelier (not shown) given to Katie by a friend. The bedroom is a peaceful, beautiful living space filled with love.

Creating a Glam Garden

I always say there's nothing paint can't make pretty! And I think this old iron patio chair is certainly proof what color can do for something.

First, I rubbed down the chair with double zero (00) grade steel wool just to remove any rusty flakes and build up. Then I wiped the chair clean and grabbed the spray paint can.

Home Depot in Tooele has some fabulous new colors-- and this blue is one of them. I also grabbed a vibrant purple for an iron bench, but you'll have to wait until I'm done to see the finished product.

I was lucky to find the coordinating plastic planter at Wal Mart (just $3).

Once some colorful flowers are added, this planter will be a focal point in any yard. SOLD!

My daughter, Berkeley, just received this adorable sleepover invite... and I liked it so much I wanted to share... The invite has 3 pieces... a handmade sleeping bag, a scrapbook little girl (complete with a ponytail just like the birthday girl herself) and the sleepover details.

Berkeley and I had a lot of fun this weekend making her birthday cake together. It was for her party (which was at Tooele Gymnastics Academy and was a total blast!)... she not only loved the ladybug design, but she was also proud she had an active role in making the cake. Her friends were impressed and it made her party even more special.

To make the cake, we baked two round cakes. We covered the bottom round in chocolate frosting. The top round we cut in half, postitioned the halfs as wings and frosted them with red frosting. Berkeley then put on the bug's black dots and we crafted eyes out of marshmallows with a dab of black frosting.

A Coat of Paint

You hear it all the time -- what a difference a fresh coat of paint does for something. And it's true... that's all we did to this dresser - literally dressed with a new coat of black paint and it looks 100x better! FYI... for some reason, the paint did not want to adhere to this dresser and it took quite a few quotes of primer, applied lightly over and over again with a spray can. Then, it took three coats of brushing the color on... but in the end it was worth it!

St. Patrick's Day never goes overlooked in my home... My great grandparents left Ireland to come to America, and my grandma, MaDean as we called her (her name was really Eldean), shared stories about her Irish family and made us proud of our ancestry. We never miss having corned beef and cabbage when March 17 rolls around...

My sister-in-law, Katie, made me this for my birthday and I love it!
Not only are handmade gifts always a treat, this table runner has added a colorful, cheerful touch to our home when it's needed most -- during our yucky inversion-grey days. This table runner may just be the thing that gets me through a few more months of the winter blahs....

It features a variety of fabrics that all look great together... there's even a few shades of blue that play perfectly off our old church pew and the vintage metal colander. When spring gets closer, the runner will especially look good with my faux cherry blossoms in a weathered vase.

Chistmas Mantle

Last month (Nov. 9 post), I showed you how I transitioned our fireplace mantle from Halloween and into fall....well, since we're more than half way through December, I wanted to show how I transitioned our mantle from fall and into Christmas... I keep the main pieces that I use year round -- the HOME blocks, milk glass containers and the large square tin -- and dress them up with stockings, pinecones, berries, a pair of reindeer and a vintage set of skis and poles. We hung the stockings using small gold cup hooks... when Christmas is over and it's time for the stockings to come down, the hooks come out and their holes are small enough they won't be noticed. Lisa D. (one of our fab gals at homebodies) is kind enough to share some beautiful photos of her home this time of year. Lisa D. is a country decorating Goddess... and she is creative beyond compare. Plus, she puts her equally handy hubby to work... he crafted the star-studded shutters and helped with the stunning chandelier medallion. The medallion was actually cut out of a much larger wall tin (it originally measured about four-feet square) that Lisa D. found at homebodies. Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle

I like this desert for two reasons: 1. it's from Paula Deen (so you know it spares no calories!) and 2. it offers a chance to show off a pretty bowl.

Oh-- and it's easy.

Ingredients

2 (14 oz.) packages of gingerbread mix

1 (5 oz.) box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix (I've used the no-cook version and it's just as good.)

1 (30 oz) can pumpkin pie filling

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon

1 (12 oz.) container of frozen whipped topping

1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional

Directions

Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions: cool completely. Meanwhile prepare the pudding and set aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar and cardamom (or cinnamon) into the pudding. Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping. Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding and whipped topping. Sprinkle off the top with crushed gingersnaps if desired. Refrigerate overnight.

Moving from Halloween and into Fall

It's been awhile since we've posted... any most of you have probably already transitioned your Halloween decor into fall... but in case you haven't--or you're looking for ideas how to easily do so, I wanted to share our fireplace decor with you. Our fireplace is one of the "main" areas that we change out with the seasons. But, because this time of year is so hectic anyway, we like to keep the switch simple... getting rid of some elements while keeping others in place.

For Halloween our mantel consisted of our HOME letters (these stay in place almost year round), my favorite milk glass vases filled with pumpkins (from homebodies of course!), a metal tin (which also is a year-round staple) and a framed spider print (found the frame at a yardsale, painted in black and put newspaper and cut-out spiders in place as artwork). Faux spider web draped over the whole thing added just the amount of spooky.

To transition into fall, we removed the faux spider web, switched out the framed spider print with a colorful fall wreath (from homebodies) and added our pilgrims and owl candles (also from homebodies). It's not much, but it's enough to get us through Thanksgiving and then it's onto Christmas!

We love our Halloween window display at homebodies! In fact, we used this witch silhouette 5 years ago when we first opened our doors. Back then, we crafted her out of black paper... this time we cut the witch and her two feline friends out of plywood. Since I already had J busy with the saw, he made us another one for our yard. Here are photos of both homebodies and our front yard--both look great! (The tombstones are from Halloween City in Tooele.) If you want to make one for yourself--it's easy! Our first Downtown Sidewalk Sale was a huge success-- and a lot of fun. It was exciting to see so much activity going on in the downtown area... not only the sidewalk sale hosted by several downtown businesses, but also the Veteran's event at Veteran's Park, which had vintage cars, live music, food and more. Saturday was a lot of fun!

Tooele is trying to get its Farmers' Market up and going again.
Every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. there will be local vendors selling fresh produce over at Veteran's Park--just across the street from homebodies. I just ran over and grabbed lots of goodies for less than $7! Cherry tomatoes were only $1 a pound, fresh green beans (three varieties) were .50 cents a pound and cantaloupes were the same low price. Best of all, it's supporting local AND it's produce that doesn't taste waxy.

I found this dresser at a yard sale years ago. Since then, Jeff and I have used it our own bedroom just the way we found it. It's a great piece of furniture...timeless design and LOTS of storage. But when we moved into our new home, we realized we no longer needed it. So, it was time to give it a fresh look to sell it to someone else who will enjoy it as much as we have. The first thing I wanted to tackle was the laminate top the previous owner had put on it. I feared the damage underneath might be too much to fix, but it turned out to be nothing more than a shallow scratch that measured less than 2 inches long and a half-inch wide. The glue was the toughest part. To get it off, I used a lot of elbow grease, goo-be-gone and a sander.

Next, Jeff spray painted the dresser with a primer, then off-white paint. (he's a much better spray painter than me... he has patience.) I then sanded the edges and finished it with a dark coat of stain that I applied and wiped off. Here is a look at the "upcycled" piece:

Our latest door/wall hang is perfect for this time of year! It's a pencil adorned with an apple--for a fun back-to-school theme. Our door hangs are one of our hottest sellers! Weekend Warriors

This past weekend was a lot of fun--and hard work! My girlfriend Leah drove to Tooele from Reno, Nevada, to spend the weekend at our home crafting. We made a boatload of stuff and a big mess with lots of painting, sanding. staining and glueing.

here are some baskets of painted items waiting for the sander.... It was a unique opportunity to catch up with friends (Leah's hubby and two young girls also came), and it was a win-win all around. Leah helped me make lots of good stuff for homebodies, and in return Leah took what she wanted back with her to decorate her home.

Gardens of the Gods is truly heaven on earth. Located smack dab in the middle of Colorado Springs, it is a breathtaking monument to mother nature's beauty and one man's generosity. Donated to the city by the children of Charles Elliott Perkins, the 480-acres of land has been a public park since 1909. And, surprisingly, admission is free! Visitors can walk, hike, ride mountainbikes or horses and rock climb (climbers must register beforehand) amongst the park's spectacular red rock formations. If you are only driving through the area, it's worth stopping and stretching your legs. You will be enlightened and inspired by its beauty.

I have to admit... when I first saw these ceramic white birds, I envisioned them in my own home, not homebodies. I love the 3D dimension they bring to a space--not to mention their unique beauty. The birds are shown here in small groupings; I decided to place about a dozen of them sweeping up our staircase. The effect is dramatic--but not overdone. Soft Summer Lights

I've seen this idea before--and I love it! But in case you haven't come across it before, it's worth sharing. There are several reasons I like the idea of lighting by candles inside glass jars... it's rustic, it incorporates items you probably already have on hand--and if you don't, it won't cost a lot of money to get--and any soft lighting is romantic. Just gather up about a dozen glass jars or votive holders in different sizes. Try to get jars that have a wide rim (such as jelly jars). Wrap wire around each top and twist tight to secure. Bend another piece of wire into a loop and attach as a handle. Cut varying lengths of chain and attach a small S hook to the top of each chain. Slip the S hook over a spoke of your patio umbrella and secure it with some duct tape (EVERYONE has this!). Attach another S hook to the bottom of each chain and use it to hang the lantern. You can also use citronella candles to help keep the bugs away.

Our friend Gidget hosted an amazing bridal shower last night. It was in honor of Jenna, who is getting married next week. Gidget pulled together decorative accessories from around her house and effortlessly mixed them in with fun party favors. The theme, if there was one officially, was Asian bling. There were lots of pretty sparkly, shiny things... faux diamond rings, glitter, picture frames, crystals and crowns for eye candy. The food--prepared by our own private sushi chef--was just as creative...ranging from oldtime favorites such as California roles to what I call "sushi on the fly"--that's making it up as you go.

One of my favorites were the party gifts: chopsticks tied with ribbon and graced with a faux diamond ring. It wasn't just the thoughtful gift, but it was Gidget's story behind them that she shared that made them so special. She said that in China, chopsticks are given to newlyweds. It's a symbolic gift; the chopsticks must be used together to accomplish anything. And in the case of marriage, a couple must do the same. Great advice for newlyweds or those celebrating many, many years. Thank you Gidget for sharing your story and your hosting style!

I was lucky enough to get to tour the new Women's Center at Mountain West Medical Center today...wow! The center is spacious yet it is very inviting with rich woods, soft lighting and stylish furniture. The photo here is of a bed in one of the labor & delivery rooms... I think the luxurious bedding is an example of those extra special touches that have gone into this new center, and it is certainly an indication of the level of quality the hospital is striving for. In addition to a nice atmosphere, the center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The new Women's Center will start accepting patients next week - including moms-to-be and those in need of gynecological surgeries. Our community is lucky to get something so nice so close!

Our family just moved into our new home and we're starting to realize some things are missing, including somewhere to hang our clothes in the laundry room. I remembered seeing this idea some time ago, and asked Jeff to give it a try (BTW that's how most design projects go in our home...I come up with the idea but Jeff gets stuck with the work...I like the arrangement...Jeff probably not so much.)

In this case, the end result is perfect! For our clothes rack, we chose metal plumming hardware fastened together and into the wall. I love it because it's rustic, it serves it purpose and it only cost about $13.

Weathered Pots

here at homebodies, we like our flowers and plants to be full of life and our planters to look like they are decades old. Good news is that you don't have to wait years for your pots to look old, you can do it in just a matter of minutes. Here we show you 2 different finishes: lime and stain. See which one you like best (or try both) and soon your outdoor spaces will look like you've been at it for a loooonnng time.

For the lime finish, here's what you'll need: lime, water, terra cotta pots, natural brush, medium grit sandpaper.

The lime adds a lovely weathered texture to the terra cotta...but don't use the lime finish on pots that will be placed outside - the lime will wash away in the first rain.
Mix one part lime to two parts water. Stir until fully combined. Using a natural brush, brush the lime over the pot. It will dry fairly quickly. Once the lime wash is completely dry, randomly sand the pot to achieve desired weathered look.

For the stain finish, you'll need: dark wood stain, old rag/cloth, terra cotta pot. The wood stain gives the terra cotta a dark weather-beaten look. I love the texture! Dip an old rag into the wood stain. Rub stain evenly into the terra cotta. Rub off the excess. Let the stain dry and repeat for a mottled look.

Food Co-op in Tooele County

I like the Utah food co-op because it supports local farmers and businesses and you get great stuff for a great price..... but one of the things I didn't like was pickup day - because of the food co-op's popularity, picking up your goods could be not only crowded but frustrating. Now, even that will improve - Tooele County is getting another pickup site. In addition to St. Barnabus Church, the Tooele County Senior Citizen Center will also now be available.
