Happy Earth Day! As I was driving to work, I started thinking about what we, our family, do to help the earth... it's not much but it's certainly more than what we did five years ago.
We recycle newspaper and other paper (we have a big metal basket right by the fireplace and we use the paper as kindling during the cold moths) and we choose from the many metal recycle bins around town. We also
recycle plastic, bottles/glass and aluminum cans. These we take to
Green Box Recycling out at the Industrial Depot. The kids love that we actually get money (about .46 cents per lb. last time I checked) for the cans.
We
re-use the same plastic water bottles over and over (sometimes a little too long I think) and we try to
wash most of our clothes in cold water, and be mindful of water conservation in and outside of the home. As far as energy consumption goes, we started a few years back to change out our lightbulbs with the
energy efficient ones and now when we leave town for a few days, we
unplug small appliances and electronics.
Is any of it making a difference? I'd like to think so... and it certainly makes us feel good. Now that I've shared some of our "green" efforts, please share yours. Together, we really can make a difference for a healthier planet.
